Journey to the Sea: An S.O.S. from Our Oceans

May 5 - August 19, 2018

Visitors are invited to take a dive into the ocean at the PlayHouse this summer! Journey to the Sea: An S.O.S from Our Oceans is an art installation made from recycled materials. This project was created by Professor Margaret LeJeune and the student-artists enrolled in the Art and The Environment class at Bradley University.

In the “ocean” space, light filters through blue glass windows revealing marine creatures while blue-green liquids held in recycled plastic bottles hang over head to mimic ocean waves. Benches and sand boxes are transformed into coral reefs that invite viewers to encounter reef creatures. Outside the windows visitors see animals on "the shore" including an albatross and a sea turtle. During your visit you can sort marine life from plastic debris at the sand table to help clean up our ocean environment, and leave a message in a bottle to share your thoughts on what YOU can do to improve ocean environmental conditions.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with Bradley University's Art and The Environment class. Student-artists include Kaitlyn Christenson, Jamie Lankford, Katelyn Edwards, Jackie Payne, Sydney Ryan, Katelynn Shook, Mathilda Bell, and Devin Bryant.

This project was made possible by The Fritz and Doris S. Reuling Charitable Fund and the George A. Fulton Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois; Illinois American Water; Doug and Eileen Leunig; Martin One Source; and generous sponsors who donated through Go Fund Me.
