Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Peoria PlayHouse
January 21, 2019 | 12–3PM
Free with museum admission or membership

Beginning in 1994, the US government recognized Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a “day ON, not a day off” filled with volunteer opportunities.

Children, teens, and their families are invited to the Peoria PlayHouse to learn about community service and advocacy by participating in three projects.

1) Work individually or as a family to assemble a blessing bag for a local homeless person. These bags include items like toiletries, socks, and snacks, as well as a card from the volunteers who made them.

2) Kids and teens can write a letter or postcard to a politician on an issue important to them or write in support of museum funding to Congress!

3) Promote reuse and less trash by helping us decorate bags to use to collect items that the PlayHouse can use as art materials in our Maker Space. We will distribute these bags to families, offering them a third choice for useful items that would otherwise go in the trash or recycling.

The event will also feature a collaborative art project, and civil rights themed storytime.
